99 Bottles of Beer (also called 99 Bottles of Pop) is a traditional folk song that is often sung during road trips.

On Married... with Children it is heard in multiple episodes.

Background[]

The song dates back to the mid 20th century. It is a popular choice for long road trips or scouting adventures, due to the simple repetitive nature that only requires counting down from 99 to 1, making it easy to learn. Once the singer usually reach 0 bottles, the lyric changes to "No more bottles of beer on the wall" and suggests that they go out and buy some more.

While no one knows the exact date when the song was written, some believe its can be traced back to a 14th century song called, “Ten Green Bottles,” which is also a numerically-repetitive song that involves bottles on a wall. [1]

While there are some variations with the lyrics, the two versions listed below are the most commonly used (and the ones heard on MWC)

Usage on MWC[]

In the Season 5 episode, "Route 666 (Part 1)" the Bundy family sings it as they start on their road trip from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, CA for Al's shoe convention. They sing the first verse, before they throw their trash out onto the road and comment on the beauty of America.

In the Season 6 episode, "The Gas Station Show", Al sings the song as Peg and Bud help him push the Dodge into a gas station, while Kelly drives. As they pull in, he is already singing "64 bottles of beer".

In the Season 7 episode, "T-R-A-Something-Something Spells Tramp", Kelly sings the song as she tries to make her way out of the wood, after her date, Ralph left her there for not putting out. She manages to get down to "89 bottles of beer" but due to poor math skills, she pauses and sings the next line as "80-10 bottles of beer" before coming across two other stranded girls, Lorraine and D.J..

In the Season 10 episode, "Spring Break (Part 2)", after finding out that Kelly and her friends, as well as Jefferson D'Arcy, Al, and Griff have gone to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Bud and his friends, along with Marcy D'Arcy decide to drive down there. They sing a variation called "98 Luscious Hooters on the Wall". The boys sing a the first verse before Marcy stops in disgusts and suggests that since it will be a long trip that they just enjoy the view of America.
