A Guerra dos Pintos (War of the Pintos, also known as Fockers' Wars) was a Brazilian adaptation of the American sitcom Married... with Children. It originally aired on Rede Bandeirantes from June 13, 1999 to December 4 1999.
It is the first MWC remake from Latin America, but the only one that uses Portuguese instead of Spanish.
Story[]
The show tells the story of a typical middle-class family called the Pintos. The main character is Ze Pinto, a guy without ambitions who became an assistant manager at a shoe store simply because he was the brother-in-law of the owner of the establishment. His only pleasure is to watch television while drinking beer.
His family consisted of his wife Neide, who inherited the house where the family lives from her late father. As she won the house, Neide thought he needed to do nothing else in life. This included washing, ironing, cooking and mostly working. The couple's children were: Kelly who is 15 years old and despite being an idiot, is the typical sexy girl. She believes herself to be the smartest in the family, but she is actually repeating her mother's life. Her big dream is to have a rich husband who would support her for the rest of her life; and the youngest child, Joca, was no less accommodating and futile. He is 13 years old and is the smartest in the family. The only problem in his life is that he could never get a girl. And in the rare times he could get one, he never had anything but simple kisses.
The Pintos soon meet their newest neighbors, Marcia and Aderbal Fialho.
Cancellation[]
Although a total of 59 episodes were filmed, only 22 were aired before it was cancelled. As noted in a Reddit post[1], some of the reasons as to why the show was not popular include:
- The 3 camera setup and canned laughter is uncommon for most Brazilian sitcoms.
- The concept of "lower class" is different between the United States and South America. Al Bundy's house has a higher standard than most mid-class houses in Brazil. A guy selling shoes in Brazil would not be able to afford such a house.
- The claustrophobic nature of the show. The small housings and crowded neighborhoods of Brazil forces people to go outside and interact with a wider array of people from day to day, in contrast to Al living in his own personal hell.
