Blue Velvet is a 1950 traditional pop song written and composed by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris.
On Married... with Children, it is heard in the Season 6 episode, "I Who Have Nothing".
Background[]
It was inspired after one of the songwriters noticed a woman wearing a dress made of blue velvet while staying at a hotel.
Although it has been performed by various singers since the early 1950s, the most well known version was sung by Bobby Vinton, which was recorded and released in 1963. It is also the version heard in the episode.
Usage on Married... with Children[]
In "I Who Have Nothing", Al Bundy tries to retrieve his game winning football from his ex-girlfriend, Sandy Jorgenson. After arriving at her apartment, she insist that he owes her a dance, as he had dumped her at the homecoming dance. She then says that she wants to dance to "Blue Velvet", which was their song. He agrees to dance with her, but only if the song comes on the radio.
As soon as she turns it on, the song starts to play, causing Al to look up and sarcastically quip, "That's a good one, God". They start to slow dance before she decides to fondle his rear end, much to his dismay. After a moment he tries to sit down, before "Rock Around The Clock" starts up, forcing Al into another dance with Sandy.
Lyrics[]
(Blue velvet)
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars
She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May, her tender sighs
Love was ours
Ours, a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left gone was the glow of
Blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm a memory through the years
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears
She wore blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm a memory through the years
And I still can see blue velvet through my tears
(Blue velvet, ooh)
