Casados con Hijos (Married with Children), also known as Casados con Hijos México , is a Mexican adaptation of the American sitcom Married... with Children. It originally aired on the Sony Channel in May 2024. Beginning on September 6, 2024, the Miami-based streaming service, Vix acquired the exclusive international broadcast rights to the series, making it available to watch in the United States with English subtitles.
As of September 2024, the first season consist of 18 episodes and a second season had been greenlit to begin filming.
It is the fifth MWC remake from Latin America and the fifth Spanish-language adaptation, following the versions from Columbia, Argentina, Chile, and Spain.
Background[]
Like the other MWC remakes, the Mexican version followed the plot, gags, and dialogue of the original scripts closely. Many of the changes that were made reflect the modern world and Mexican culture, such as:
- Changing the characters' names to Spanish based names.
- The use of modern technology that did not exist during MWC, such as smartphones, self-serve kiosks, social media, and air fryers.
- Unlike Peggy Bundy, Angie is an entrepreneur who uses social media to sell her fashion brand and earn money for herself, though she still manages to ignore doing household chores, shopping for groceries, or being a good mother and wife.
- Unlike the other Spanish language adaptions, Poncho is depicted as having played American Football like Al Bundy, whereas the other adaptations depict the leading male as having played fútbol (soccer) before their career was ended. Though, it should be noted that Poncho is also passionate about fútbol.
- In the pilot episode, Poncho explains that he puts his hand down his pants due to the effects of COVID-19 which cost him his sense of smell, before suddenly pulling it out and asking Angie to smell it for him.
- Instead of the 1965 Mustang, Poncho and Steve buy a 1973 Vocho Clasico (The Mexican name for the VW Beetle).
- When Poncho meets the stewardesses at Luis' apartment, he kisses the first one on the cheek only once. She then explains that since she is from Spain it is supposed to be two kisses. He then does the two kisses when the other stewardess arrives.
- While kissing on the cheek as a greeting is common throughout Hispanic culture, in Spain, it is done twice with both cheeks, while in Mexico (and most other Latin American countries) it is only done on one side. More specifically, in Mexico, kissing on the cheek is not as common and is typically reserved for family and close friends, while in Spain and other Latin American countries, it can be done with new acquaintances or even in a business setting and may even be followed up with a hug.[1][2][3]
Some specific episode changes include:
- In the pilot episode, Alexa's date, Cobra, whose real name is Benito, has a split tongue due to a performance accident at a rave and when he arrives, his van horn plays the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise". In the original U.S. version, Kelly's date, Cobra, whose real name is Stanley, has a sore on his mouth due to a cigar burn and his nickname comes from the cobra painted on his van. His van plays the opening theme to the television show, Dragnet.
- In the adaptation of "Peggy Sue Got Work", Angie works as a greeter at the bank where Marilu and Steve work at instead of the clock department at Muldin's.
- In the adaptation of "Sixteen Years and What Do You Get?" instead of getting an expensive watch, Poncho attempted to purchase a newer smartphone for Angie before his card was declined. Additionally, Bobo and Marcel are changed into a trio of guitarists and a Japanese chef.
- In the adaptation of "Married... without Children", instead of punks Sean, Dweep and Debbie, the friends that Alexa brings over are all normal teenage females who also seem to be on good terms with her brother. After buying food from Carl's Jr. for the kids, Alexa then gives Marilú what appears to be a pot brownie, leading to an all-night party. Unlike the original ending, Poncho and Angie arrive to see Johnathan making out with one of Alexa's friends and Marilú twerking in front of the now larger group of teens.
- In the adaptation of "Al Loses His Cherry", the stewardesses are friends instead of twin sisters like Sherry Cherry and Terry Cherry and are originally from Spain. They also arrive at Luis' apartment in their stewardess outfits.
- In the adaptation of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Part 1)", the woman who is hired to work on the fridge is actually a stripper with no real experience doing repairs. She then has Poncho pay 3000 pesos in advance and warns him that touching is not allowed. After Estaban arrives and they watch her dance in the kitchen, she tells them that a minimum tip for her is 1000 pesos. Although Estaban pays her a tip, Poncho slides the money into her underwear, due to Estaban being too nervous to do so. After Marilu catches Estaban staring at the repair woman, she also complains to her as well, saying that she did not expect this type of service. The repair woman then leaves and tells Poncho to call her again.
