Edd Hall (born December 7, 1958) is an American actor, media personality, and announcer who is best known as being the announcer for the NBC late night talk show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
On Married... with Children, he appeared in various roles, most prominently, as an announcer, for a total of fifteen episodes, between seasons 5 and 9.
Career[]
Late Night with David Letterman[]
Hall started in show business at an early age. As a child and teenager, he worked as a magician, clown, fire-eater, and radio announcer. Hall's first network TV job was for Saturday Night Live as an NBC page in January 1979. His first network TV appearance was performing an impression of Tom Snyder on Tomorrow Coast to Coast in March 1980. In June 1980, Hall began working as a production assistant for The David Letterman Show, David Letterman's short-lived morning show on NBC.
In 1982, he became Letterman's visuals producer on Late Night with David Letterman. He remained with Letterman until 1990, often appearing in or lending his voice to comedy sketches on the show. Soon after leaving Letterman in 1990, Hall moved to Los Angeles where he designed the Worldwide Pants logo and animation for Letterman's company.
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno[]
Hall is most famous for his work on television as the announcer on NBC-TV's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2004. During the show's introduction, he famously introduced himself by saying "...And me, I'm Edd Hall." Hall would also appear in various sketches on the show, often serving as a stooge to Leno. The sketches would also feature memorable gags such as Hall being ran over while in the studio parking lot, being transported to odd locations and even getting into a brawl with Leno on The Jerry Springer Show.
In 2004, Hall announced that he was leaving the show to pursue acting role, noting that the producers had been reducing the amount of sketches, which Hall was frequently featured in, reducing his role on the show to simply being an announcer. In a 2009 interview, he also noted another reason as to why he left was that while working on The Tonight Show was fun and required only a few hours of work, he had to be there everyday and could not take on other acting gigs. He also mentioned that he was invited back to the show to celebrate Leno's retirement in 2009.[1][2]
He was controversially replaced by "Stuttering John" Melendez, a staffer from the radio program, The Howard Stern Show. The move was considered a thinly veiled attempt to attract a younger demographic. The hiring of Melendez, which was carried out by Leno without Stern's knowledge, prompted a rift between Stern and Leno. Stern launched into tirades on his show for many weeks on saying Leno was "ripping him off", citing previously "lifted" material from his show such as "Jaywalking" ripping off Stern's "homeless game".
Friday Night[]
While working at The Tonight Show, he also served as the announcer (and later, co-host) for NBC's late night music video/comedy program, Friday Night (formerly known as Friday Night Videos) alongside Rita Sever from 1994 to 2000. During its last two years, it was filmed on the The Tonight Show set.
Return to Letterman[]
In 2010, he returned to The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS doing voice over work for several sketches. In one of his first return appearances, Hall voiced a parody promo for Jay Leno's controversial return to the The Tonight Show (which saw Conan O'Brian, who had left Late Night with Conan O'Brian to replace Leno, being ousted after less than a year on air) where he pointed out that the show would have the same jokes and people that Leno stole from Letterman and Stern, before delivering his old Tonight Show line "...And me, I'm Edd Hall." [3] He continued appearing on the show until Letterman retired in 2015.
Other works[]
Following his move to Los Angeles in 1990, he worked on various television shows. One of his first roles was as the announcer and voice actor for the short-lived FOX sketch comedy series, The Edge. After becoming the The Tonight Show announcer, he continued appearing on shows often as a announcer. Some of the shows include Blossom, J.A.G., Murphy Brown, and Kim Possible.
Following his departure from The Tonight Show, he served as the announcer for the game show, Merv Griffin's Crosswords from 2007 to 2008. He has since appeared in various films and television shows such as The Doctors, Days of Our Lives, Sullivan & Son, and The Young and the Restless, often playing an announcer or news reporter.
