Egy rém rendes család Budapesten (A Terribly Neat Family in Budapest) is a Hungarian adaptation of the American sitcom, Married... with Children. It originally aired on TV2 from October 15, 2006 to June 27, 2007 for a total of 26 episodes.

Background[]

Like the other MWC remakes, the Hungarian version followed the plot, gags, and dialogue of the original scripts closely. The production staff received help and advice from several Americans who worked on MWC (notably Fran McConnell, who served as production supervision for MWC during seasons 1 through 4) , who sought to make a sitcom that was clearly similar to the original series and only made minor detail changes. The Hungarian screenwriters adapted the jokes of the series and the American middle class culture to make it more understandable and suitable for Hungarian culture.

All of the episodes are based on scripts from Seasons 1 through 3, with very few drastic changes. Many of the changes that were made reflect Hungarian culture and modern times, such as:

  • Sanyi is a shoe store manager instead of just a shoe salesman. as a Hungarian shoe salesman would not be able to earn enough to be considered lower middle class.
  • Juci is not a simple housewife who does nothing to earn money. Instead, she is a home-based entrepreneur who sells her own beauty product, "Enci Kenci," to women in the area. Regardless, she neglects her maternal and marital affairs as much as Peggy does.
  • The house that the Bándi family lives in is not typical in Hungary, as the equivalent of an American middle-class house would be a Hungarian family living a a 6-storey panel apartment. As such, the American staffers that helped with production insisted that the family live in a house and then put them as living in a small house on the outskirts of Budapest. It is also indicated that Juci had inherited the house from her father.
  • The house does not have a washer-dryer set like the Bundys did, as this is not common for Hungarians, especially those in the lower-middle class.
  • While Al is shown to hate the French, Sanyi hates the people of Turkey.
  • Like virtually all other international MWC remakes, Sanyi is a fan of soccer (a.k.a. football/fútbol) instead American football. Additionally, instead of doing Al's hand down his pants gesture, Sanyi puts a plush soccer ball underneath his arm to symbolize this.
  • In "Whose Room Is It Anyway?", Al mentioned that he was planning to build a boat, while in this adaptation, Sanyi is tinkering with a motorcycle.
  • In the adaptation of "The Great Escape", it is hinted that Sanyi has a nylon/pantyhose fetish as he caressed the leg of the Hungarian version of Jade. Similarly, Al had mentioned that he likes the look of women in nylon stockings in several episodes. Additionally, the female trio who visit Al before Peg convinces them to visit Morty's Shoes wore aerobics attire that was common in the 1980s, while in this adaptation, they are wearing pantyhose and short skirts, looking as if they will be going to a concert or nightclub.

Story[]

The Bándi family is a parody of a typical Hungarian family, consisting of husband/father, Sanyi, wife/mother Juci and their two children Dia and Misi. The family live in a relatively small house on the outskirts of Budapest, which consist of just a living room with an American style kitchen, a master bedroom, and a shared children’s room furnished in the attic. Despite being the model of a typical nuclear family, they go against all traditional family values. They are the most selfish people in the world, where they show no respect for anyone nor anything, but still take pride in their behavior. Perhaps the only positive thing that can be said about the Bándi family is that they always stick together.

Sanyi and Juci have been married since graduating from high school, but they both feel their lives have deteriorated since then. Sanyi thinks of Juci as lazy, selfish and parasitic, while Juci thinks of Sanyi as a jerk, loser, and misogynistic . Their two children are the fifteen-year-old flirtatious Dia, and the twelve-year-old slightly immature Misi, both of whom attend the very same high school that their parents went to many years ago.

Recently, a new couple moved into the nicer looking villa that is adjacent to the Bándi's tiny dilapidated house. The new neighbors are Edit and Robi Vastagh, a well-to-do couple, who work in the banking industry. Despite being he same age as the adult Bándis, they are the complete opposites, as Robi and Edit are living their pre-planned, perfect lives and love each other nauseatingly. Everything is perfectly fine with them until they meet the Bándis, whose style and outlook on life, while terrifying, begins to influence them.
