I Got You Babe is a 1965 folk rock song performed by the then-husband and wife duo, Sonny & Cher.

The song is heard on Married... with Children, in the Season 3 episode, "The Gypsy Cried"

Background[]

Written and produced by Sonny Bono, who was an up and coming songwriter at the time, the song depicts young love and became an anthem for the hippie counterculture movement of the 1960s. Despite Cher not originally liking it, it became the signature hit for the duo, who divorced 10 years later. Despite their divorce and breakup of the duo in 1977, the couple did reunite to perform this song one last time in 1987 during an impromptu reunion on Late Night with David Letterman.

The song would later be covered by the British band UB40 featuring Chrissie Hynde of the band, The Pretenders, in 1985.

In 1993, Cher recorded a rock version of the song featuring the cartoon characters, Beavis and Butt-Head, with the trio also poking fun at her ex-husband.

Following Sonny Bono's death during a skiing trip in 1998, Cher would perform the song live on a few occasions, more recently, using a projection and previously recorded vocal takes of Sonny during her Las Vegas residency in 2020.

Appearance on Married... with Children[]

In the Season 3 episode, "The Gypsy Cried", Marcy and Steve Rhoades invite Al Bundy and Peggy Bundy to accompany them on a flight to New York, as she will be assisting her boss, Mr. Vandergeld, at the "Women in Banking" banquet. Though Marcy invites the Bundys primarily to comfort her after a gypsy predicted that she would have bad luck, while the other 3 experienced good luck.

After Marcy punches Mr. Vandergeld, Steve reassures her that everything will be fine, as she knows about her boss' mistress, Fluffy, that Mrs. Vandergeld doesn't know about. Al and Peggy are then shown singing part of the song's bridge section, replacing most of it with "Nana na na na" to match the melody and then sing the final chorus together.

Trivia[]

  • Sonny and Cher would be referenced on the show in later seasons, with Cher mostly being mocked for dating men 10 or more years younger than her, (including Jefferson D'Arcy at one point) and Sonny being mentioned for becoming a politician in the late 1980s with no prior experience.

Lyrics[]

[Cher]
They say we're young and we don't know
we won't find out until we grow

[Sonny]
Well I don't know if all that's true
'cause you got me, and baby I got you

[Sonny]
Babe

[Both]
I got you babe
I got you babe

[Cher]
They say our love won't pay the rent
before it's earned, our money's all been spent

[Sonny]
I guess that's so, we don't have a pot
but at least I'm sure of all the things we got

[Sonny]
Babe

[Both]
I got you babe
I got you babe

[Sonny]
I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring

[Cher]
And when I'm sad, you're a clown
and if I get scared, you're always around
So let them say your hair's too long
'cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong

[Sonny]
Then put your little hand in mine
there ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb

[Sonny]
Babe

[Both]
I got you babe
I got you babe

[Sonny]
I got you to hold my hand

[Cher]
I got you to understand

[Sonny]
I got you to walk with me

[Cher]
I got you to talk with me

[Sonny]
I got you to kiss goodnight

[Cher]
I got you to hold me tight

[Sonny]
I got you, I won't let go

[Cher]
I got you to love me so

[Both]
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe
