Prior to his appearance, he was mentioned in several episodes by Al Bundy.

In the Season 5 episode, "Weenie Tot Lovers and Other Strangers", as Al waits for Kelly Bundy during her audition to become "Miss Weenie Tot", he begins to flirt with Flopsy, the secretary. After telling her an exaggerated story of how he is a 25 year old millionaire who adopted Kelly and even fought off a beast that killed his wife with only a sword in hand to obtain the world's largest diamond, he finally admits that it was all made up (and that it was his feet that she had smelled earlier). Al then tells her that he is actually Joe Namath and notes that he was the MVP at the 1969 Super Bowl, hoping that it would finally impress her. Instead, Flopsy reveals that she wasn't even born yet in 1969, causing Al to burst into tears, dropping his head on her desk.

In the Season 6 episode, "Just Shoe It", when Al goes in to audition for the role of a local athlete for a shoe commercial, the secretary mentions that several other professional athletes including "Mr. Namath" would be coming to audition, before introducing Al to the casting director as "Mr. Bindy".

In the Season 8 episode, "Dances with Weezie", Namath appears as himself, working as a bartender at the Bullpen Sports Bar. Al spots him and tells him how much of a fan he is, before asking the quarterback a question. Namath is flattered at first, believing that Al wanted to ask him about the time he lead the Jets to the Super Bowl and if he had believe in himself. Al then reveals that his actual question was about who starred in the first Miller Lite commercial, leaving Joe upset and asks "Who cares?!". Later, as a fight breaks out, Namath smashes a bottle over a person's head and then tells fellow professional athletes Johnny Bench and Ernie Banks, how he wishes that he was still in the game.

In the Season 8 episode, "Field of Screams", during Al's dream about being part of the American All Star football team, the announcer also mentions Namath and fellow NFL player/actor, Jim Brown.
