Matrimonio con hijos (Matrimony with Children) is a Spanish adaptation of the American sitcom, Married... with Children. It aired from May 14, 2006 to January 7, 2007 on Cuatro.
It is also the fourth Spanish language adaptation, following the Columbian, Argentinian, and Chilean versions, though it is the only one that uses "matrimonio" (Marriage/Matrimony or Married Couple) instead of "casado" (Married) in its title.
Background[]
Like the other MWC remakes, the Spanish version followed the plot, gags, and dialogue of the original scripts closely. All of the episodes are based on scripts from Seasons 1 through 4. Compared to the other Spanish language adaptations, this version made very few drastic changes. Many of the changes that were made reflect Spanish culture and modern times, such as:
- Changing the characters' names to Spanish based names.
- Emphasizing fútbol (soccer) over American football, wrestling, and softball. Bowling is shown, though it is only featured in one particular episode. Futsal, (football / soccer played on an indoor court instead of a grass field) is also mentioned.
- The use of modern technology that did not exist during MWC, such as digital camcorders, flat screen televisions, and cell phones.
- Instead of a 1967 Ford Mustang, Fran and Pelayo purchase and repair a Renault Fuego from the 1980s.
- In the adaptation of "The Poker Game", Fran and his friends describe the perfect woman as having the butt of American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, the breasts of Italian actress Sophia Loren, (before another suggests a younger woman, American actress Angelina Jolie) and the lips of American model and actress Marilyn Monroe. The group finally comes to an agreement and in unison, declare Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky as the perfect woman.
- In the adaptation of "Poppy's by the Tree (Part 1)" and "Poppy's by the Tree (Part 2)", the family travels to "Aguaturbia" ("Cloudy Water") where the town's popular attractions are a goat with two heads and the man who met Spanish actress, Leticia Sabater.
Story[]
The Camachos are an average middle-class family who live in a typical townhouse on the outskirts of the city. They usually have nothing good to say about anyone, not even themselves. Fran and Lola met in high school, and since then neither of them has changed much. They both feel that life has ripped them off. He thinks she's nuts, she thinks he's a rat. They have two children: Belén, a bit light-headed, and Kiko, her precocious son.
Although it weighs them, the two study at the same institute. The Camachos' neighbors are Pati De López and her husband, Pelayo. The two work in a savings bank and are completely opposite to the Camachos. At first glance it may seem that the Camachos cannot stand each other, but their hurtful comments, their excessive joy every time the other fails, or their continued tripping mean nothing to the strong ties that unite this family. Affection is something that is not always shown.
