Movin' On Up is a song by Ja'net DuBois and served as the opening theme song for the TV sitcom, The Jeffersons.

It is heard on Married...with Children in various episodes.

In Here's Lookin' at You, Kid, Kelly tells Al and Peg that Bud has been helping her study history. She then confuses U.S. President Thomas Jefferson with George Jefferson from The Jeffersons and believes that Thomas Jefferson was married to Weezey. She then begins to sing "Movin' On Up" much to Al's dismay believing that Thomas Jefferson wrote the lyrics of the song on the back of the Declaration of Independence.

In Dances with Weezie, Peggy, Marcy, Bud and Kelly sing the song as they get ready for the Movin' On Up Tour. The song is then heard again as Peggy, Al, Jefferson and Marcy take their seats and finally at the end of the episode, as Bud and Kelly force Al and Jefferson to watch The Jeffersons marathon.

In The Undergraduate, thinking that Kelly will marry Mr. Bennett, Al calls up Gary and starts to quote the opening lyrics, implying that he is quitting now that he will be rich. Later he starts to gleefully dance as he sings the rest of the lyrics over the phone, unaware that Kelly dumped Mr. Bennett and his fortune for Stitch.

Trivia[]

  • MWC creators Ron Leavitt and Michael G. Moye , as well as MWC producer John Maxwell Anderson were producers on The Jeffersons.
  • The version heard in "Dances with Weezie", during "The Jeffersons Live" and again at the end of the episode was done by Clydene Jackson Edwards instead of using the original version. This was likely due to licensing issues.

Lyrics[]

Well we're movin' on up
(Movin' on up)
To the east side
(Come on, movin' on up)
To a deluxe apartment in the sky
Movin' on up
(Movin' on up)
To the east side
(Come on, movin' on up)
We finally got a piece
Of the pie

Fish don't fry in the kitchen
Beans don't burn on the grill
Took a whole lotta tryin'
Just to get up that hill

Now we're up in the big leagues
Gettin' our turn at bat
As long as we live
It's you and me, baby
There ain't nothin' wrong with that

Well we're movin' on up
(Movin' on up)
To the east side
(Come on, movin' on up)
To a deluxe apartment in the sky
Movin' on up
(Movin' on up)
To the east side
(Come on, movin' on up)
We finally got a piece
Of the pie
