New York, New York (also known as Theme from New York, New York ) is a song written for the 1977 film of the same name.
Although the song was originally performed by singer Liza Minnelli in 1977 for the film's soundtrack, the song gained more notoriety when Frank Sinatra (who also sang the theme song for MWC, "Love and Marriage") covered the song in 1980, making it more commonly associated with him instead of the original performer. Though, on several occasions, Minnelli and Sinatra have also performed the song together as a live duet version.
Besides the film, the song is also heard at sporting events and weddings in New York, as well as New Years in Time Square, as the song is often associated with the celebration of New York and its culture.
Appearance on Married... with Children[]
The song is heard twice on the show during seasons 3 and 4.
In "The Gypsy Cried", the song is referenced twice. First, after hearing that she'll be going to New York, Marcy says "Ah, New York! If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere", alluding to the lines from the chorus . Later, Al is heard singing the opening line as he and Peggy make their way up to first class with a snack tray they stole. They then mock those who have to sit in the coach section on the plane.
In "You Gotta Know When to Fold 'Em (Part 2)", Peggy takes the stage at a bar lounge and sings the closing lines of the song with Marcy accompanying her on piano and drums
Lyrics[]
Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it
New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it
New York, New York
I wanna wake up in a city
That doesn't sleep
And find I'm king of the hill
Top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you
New York, New York
New York, New York
I want to wake up in a city
That never sleeps
And find I'm a number one
Top of the list
King of the hill
A number one
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it
In old New York
And if I can make it there
I'm gonna make it anywhere
It's up to you
New York, New York, New York
