Synopsis[]

Part one of two-part story arc. Marcy and Peg announce that they are pregnant. Jefferson is happy and is willing to run chores for Marcy. Meanwhile, Al is devastated and so are Bud and Kelly.

Summary[]

Season 6 opened with a bang in this two-episode story, in which Jefferson and Marcy come over to announce their pregnancy, and Al mocks them, telling them sending Al into pearls of laughter saying that it's the end of Jefferson's life, until Peg tells him they are having a baby too. Jefferson is happy and is willing to run chores for the suddenly expecting Marcy. Meanwhile, Al is devastated at the prospect of having another Bundy mouth to feed on a shoe salesman's salary, and so are Bud and Kelly, who cringe at the prospect of another sibling!

Al begins to lose his hair at an accelerated rate, thinking it's the end of the world for him! Kelly and Bud, who aren't pleased with the news either, begin to take it out on poor sap Al, putting a guilt trip on him saying something like "Dad, How could you do this to us?" In a nightmare sequence, Al dreams that the child they have is a 300-pound monster (played by Abraham Benrubi, who later appears as Cousin Jimmy in the Season 7 episode The Wedding Repercussions).

Quotes[]

  • Peg: Oh, hold me! [walks ups to Al for a hug]
  • Al: Wait a second! [steps back and jumps over the back of the couch]. That can't be right! When? Why? How!? [walks to the kitchen counter] Wait a second, let me check my journal. [pulls out the journal and scans the pages] Five months ago, you say?!
  • Peg: Oh Al, isn't it a dream?
  • Al: Oh, it better be! [walks over to Peg while checking the journal] Wait, let's see now, April. April, April, ah here we go, April.[reads from his journal] "Week One: sold shoes, watched TV. [shrugs] Week Two: sold shoes, watched TV,... [emphatically, while looking at Peg] wept. Week Three: sold shoes, had a few beers, passed out..."
  • [Peggy has a very guilty look on her face as Al looks up in horror and starts to realize what happened]
  • Al: Uh oh, I dreamt I fell in a washing machine, woke up feeling cheap! PEG, WHAT ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH DID YOU DO TO ME?!?
  • Peg: Well, I couldn't help myself. [smiling] You looked so cute pulling your underwear up over your head! Hahaha! Well, I'm not made of stone, you know!

  • [Al is sitting on the couch, looking down in shame and covered in clumps of his own hair that he had been pulling out for several hours. He is wedged between Bud and Kelly, who are visibly upset with him and staring him down]
  • Kelly: What - did - you - DO?! Can't you control your animal urges?
  • Bud: Of all the bonehead blunders a middle-aged man with no income can make. [shakes his head] God, you leave him alone for one second...
  • Kelly: Did you not know the evil implications of your deed? Bad Daddy! [Kelly points her finger in his face several times to shame him, causing Al to lower his head even more each time] Bad, bad, BAD!... Bad...
  • Bud: So Mr. "Sow-my-wild-oats-at-fifty", what are we gonna do now?
  • Kelly: I'll tell you what we're gonna do, we'll be living off the scraps of scraps. Slipping in puddles of baby juice. Our home and our clothes smelling of the befouled buttocks of a child born out of middle aged lust! [turns away in disgust] Oh, the shame.
  • Bud: As if what you did wasn't bad enough, but with our MOTHER for God's sake!
  • Kelly: Well, this is one fine how-ya-doing-fine-thank-you.

  • Peg: Alright. Now, listen up everyone. Just because I'm pregnant, I don't want you to think I'm gonna be demanding or anything. Your lives won't change a bit.
  • [later that night, Peg is sitting on the couch with her feet propped up on the coffee table and eating a sandwich. Kelly is slowly reading a children's book to Peggy and the baby while a tired and miserable looking Al and Bud are on their knees, massaging her feet]
  • Kelly: And here's a picture of Mr. Rooster. "Cock-eye-dodle-doh."
  • Peg: Uh, honey, not to me, to the baby [points to her stomach].
  • Kelly: Oh, [leans in towards Peggy's baby bump] And the duck went "Quack quack" and the dog went "Boe wow" and the family went...
  • Peg: Ah, excuse me, honey... [to Al and Bud, sounding frustrated] What, are you guys on vacation? Rub, rub!
  • [Al and Bud rub even harder while Peg and Kelly share a quick laugh before continuing with the book]
  • Bud: [to Al, bitterly] Thanks for everything, "Johnny Appleseed".

  • [Kelly, Al, and Bud are sitting close to each other on the staircase and looking miserable after Peggy forced them to sit there so she and Marcy could have the couch for themselves]
  • Bud: Look how far down the chain of love we are. She's got us sitting with [distastefully as he turns to Al] him.
  • Kelly: Oh, what an odious mess we weave when first we practice to conceive.
  • Al: Now kids, I know you think this is bad for ya. But in a little while you'll be up, out of the house and on your own in just two, three... [pauses as he looks at Kelly whose eyes are following her gum being twirled around her finger] ...thirty years. So, as you can see, [Bud and Kelly turn to Al] the only one whose life has truly ended is... Daddy.
  • Kelly: Oh! [smiles]
  • Bud: Oh, that's true [smiles]

Notes[]

Title[]

  • The title of this episode is a reference to the 1988 film "She's Having a Baby".
    • It could also refer to the 1974 song "(You're) Having My Baby", a duet by Paul Anka and Odia Coates.

Trivia[]

  • For this season, the opening credits have been slightly revamped for the following cast members:
    • Amanda Bearse - Marcy at the Bundys' front entrance, smiling and waving to them before the door is shut on her. She then attempts to look in.
    • David Faustino - A shirtless Bud lifting dumbbells in the living room and kissing his biceps. Taken from "Wabbit Season".
    • Ted McGinley - Now credited as a regular cast member, he is drinking at a bar while looking at a pair of legs dancing in front of him.
  • In the opening credits for this episode, Ted McGinley is shown looking up at a dancer while accidentally pouring beer on himself. In the opening credits for the rest of season 6, he keeps his beer mug down as he looks up at the dancer.
  • This episode had 29.2 Million viewers, making it the most watched MWC episode during its run.
  • This is the first of several episodes during the sixth season where Peggy is pregnant, as Katey Sagal, who played Peggy, was pregnant in real life.
    • When Katey Sagal got pregnant in real life, the writers decided to make her character Peggy pregnant in the show as well, so they wouldn't have to hide Sagal's pregnancy. When she unexpectedly miscarried later in the season, the 11th episode, "Al Bundy, Shoe Dick" was written to reveal that the previous 10 episodes were simply Al's dream, and thus explaining why both Peggy and Marcy were no longer pregnant.
    • In seasons 8 and 10, when Sagal got pregnant again, she would be temporarily written out of the show, or her pregnancy hidden with props and camera tricks. In both instances, she successfully gave birth.
  • The giant Baby in Al's fantasy is played by an uncredited Abraham Benrubi, who would later reappear as Cousin Jimmy in the season 7 episode, "The Wedding Repercussions".
    • At the time this episode aired, Benrubi was one of the stars on the FOX teen sitcom Parker Lewis Can't Lose, which aired on Sunday nights along with MWC.
  • Al finds out that he accidentally got Peggy pregnant after getting drunk and passed out. Peggy reveals that she took advantage of him while he struggled to pull his underwear over his head in his drunken state.
  • Al attempts a Whoa Bundy! with the kids, but is ignored.
  • The book that Kelly reads to the baby, "Goody Goose", was previously used in the Season 5 episode, "Kids! Wadaya Gonna Do?" when Kelly attempted to read the book to the Hubbard kids.
  • When Peg announces that she's pregnant, the audience reacts with a 24-second long ovation - the longest ever for anything in the show.

Cultural References[]

  • After announcing their pregnancy, Jefferson compares himself to former NBA player Michael Jordan, who at the time was playing for the Chicago Bulls.
  • Bud sarcastically calls Al "Johnny Appleseed" while the two of them massage Peggy's feet.
    • Johnny Appleseed was an American nurseryman and missionary who became known for planting apple seeds wherever he went, leading to apple trees grown in parts of the Midwestern United States.

Goofs[]

  • From the beginning of the episode until after Peg reveals that she's pregnant, its very obvious that Ed O'Neill had some sort of fake hair clumps added to his head so he could remove his hair easily after the big news is revealed.
  • When Al is caught by the Baby in his fantasy, it's obvious that it's a dummy that being shaken and dangled upside down.
  • In this episode, Peggy is depicted as being extremely happy to be pregnant and pleasantly remembers all the things associated with pregnancy and motherhood. Yet, in "And Baby Makes Money", after Al tricks her, she regretted getting pregnant again due to the cleaning and washing, along with the morning sickness and varicose veins as Al pointed out. She also claimed that her life is ruined with the pregnancy and warned Al never to touch her again.
