Synopsis[]

While Al and Peg are away at a family reunion, Kelly's latest boyfriend ruins Peggy's couch, prompting the two Bundy kids to find a new, identical-looking couch before Al and Peg come home. As it turns out, there was only 2 sold of that particular couch, and the maker of the couch (who went insane and built a shrine to the Three Stooges) lives in the woods. Kelly must make a difficult deal with the couch-maker to replace it, which she does. Only when Al and Peggy go upstairs do they realize what is missing...the bed.

  • Note: Amanda Bearse doesn't appear in this episode, being fully occupied behind the camera.

Quotes[]

  • [Bud is fashioning a haphazard little love nest on the front porch as his date, Naomi looks on]
  • Bud: Now, I know this might not be quite as comfortable as what you're used to, my dear, but, uh, [stands up] personally, I find making love indoors restrictive. So I'm glad that attendant threw us out of his photomat.
  • Naomi: [unamused] You're as broke as a two-dollar wristwatch, aren't you?
  • Bud: [smiling] And hornier than a funeral in New Orleans, baby! [gestures at the makeshift bed] Shall we?
  • Naomi: [scoffs] No!
  • Bud: [offended] "Noooo!"? Where'd you pick up THAT kind of language?!
  • Naomi: Look, I don't know what kind of tramp you think I am, but just because a man can build a nest like a wren, doesn't mean I'll make out with him. Goodbye. [walks away]
  • Bud: Bu.. But, I-I.. I'm wearing 'Simply Abe!' [waves the dollar bill worn around his collar]

  • [Kelly abruptly hangs up the phone after Peggy reveals that they are coming home from Wanker County tomorrow instead next week]
  • Kelly: Bud, they're coming home tomorrow! Is there any way that I can talk you into taking full blame for this?
  • Bud: Mmm, sure. If you can get me a woman who won't say no.
  • Kelly: [pauses] So there's no way?

  • [Jefferson stops by to help Bud and Kelly out and sits on the burnt out couch]
  • Kelly: [makes prayer hands and looks upward] Oh, please let this be easy. Please, please, please.
  • Jefferson: This is not going to be easy. Now, this may come as a surprise to you, but your couch wasn't exactly a popular item.
  • Bud: How many were made? 1,000? 500?
  • Jefferson: Two.
  • Kelly: Well, how many did they sell?
  • Jefferson: One.
  • Kelly: Great! Then all we have to do is find the one they sold. How hard could that be? [smiling]
  • Bud: [stares at Kelly with a mix of disgust and disbelief while shaking his head] Boy, when your looks go, you're dead!
  • [Kelly's smile instantly disappears]
  • Bud:[nodding] ...You're dead!

Notes[]

Title[]

  • The title of the episode is a reference to the phrase "So far, so good", meaning that there are no problems to report at the moment.

Trivia[]

  • The opening scene with Bud talking on the phone to Naomi would later be used for David Faustino in the Season 9 opening credits.
  • Larry Hankin, the actor who plays Mary in this episode, would later appear as Mr. Heckles on the NBC sitcom Friends about 10 months after this episode originally aired.

Cultural References[]

  • Kelly is shown reading the children's book, The Little Engine that Could,
    • The book was previously used on MWC in the Season 3 episode,"He Thought He Could".
    • Bud also recites the famous line from the book, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can" after revealing that he might tell Peggy that Kelly and her boyfriend burned the couch down.
  • As Kelly read The Little Engine that Could, she mentions that it would "make a great TV movie starring Robert Urich or that brawny Facts of Life girl", referring to the American actor and the television sitcom, The Facts of Life.
  • Bud tells his date, Naomi, that he is "hornier than a funeral in New Orleans", which is a reference to a jazz funeral, a tradition in New Orleans, Louisiana, where a funeral procession is accompanied by a brass band.
  • When Peg is talking to Kelly and tells Al that she's wants to say goodbye, he screams out "Peg! 'To Serve Man'...its a cookbook!". This is reference to a 1959 episode of The Twilight Zone episode entitled "To Serve Man".
  • After Kelly takes a picture of the burned down couch when Bud suggested finding an old picture of the couch, Bud suggests that they take picture of her and send it to Ripley's. This in reference to the franchise, Ripley's Believe It or Not! which reports on bizarre events and items. It currently exists in various formats including a museum and television show.
    • In all fairness, Bud forgot to mention finding a picture of the old couch before it burned down, before Kelly took the picture.
  • As mentioned and later seen in Mary's cabin, there is a shrine built to Larry Fine, one of the members of The Three Stooges.
  • After describing the inspiration line that the couch came from, Mary says that he hates America, before quickly pointing that he meant the soft rock band and not the country.
  • Mary mentions that in his free time that he likes to re-enact the 1960s musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
  • Gunther mentions "Mormon" singular (mixing it it up with the insult, "Moron") after Kelly tells him that Bud actually thinks that she is shooting a commercial to combat illiteracy. This is in reference to Mormons and the religion they practice.
  • Bud mentions that Kelly move to Saudi Arabia in order to escape blame for the couch. This is in reference to the country's treatment of women.
  • In a reference to Green Acres, Peggy climbs a pole to make a call to Bud and Kelly. On Green Acres, Oliver and Lisa Douglas usually have to climb a pole to make and receive calls.
    • Peggy would do this again in several season 9 episodes.
    • Though we never know the reason why the phone is located on a pole in MWC, the reason on Green Acres is because the phone company didn't have a lone long enough to reach the kitchen.
      • This is apparently a problem in Hooterville, as the phone in Sam Drucker's store is located underneath the counter as revealed in the three-parter where Oliver takes control of the phone company. Apparently the line wasn't long enough to reach the top of the counter.
